Aged couple seek protection from son, daughter-in-law

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI DEC. 29. An aged couple has sought protection from and action against their son and daughter-in-law for allegedly torturing them to part with their house in Mansarovar Garden in North-East Delhi.

The petitioners — 78-year-old Suraj Prakash Kawatra and his 75-year-old wife Raj Rani Kawatra — have urged the court to summon their son and daughter-in-law — Naveen Arora and Neeru Arora — to explain how they have got the property transferred in the name of Neeru Arora.

The High Court received the complaint by the aged couple through a letter earlier this month. Taking note of the allegations in the letter, the Chief Justice, B.C. Patel, directed the Registry to convert the letter into a public interest litigation.

They alleged that their son and daughter-in-law had once beaten them, and Ms. Neeru had also tried to strangulate Mrs. Kawatra. Besides, Ms. Neeru's brothers, Vipin and Tony Narang, also used to subject them to physical and mental torture. The letter said the elderly couple had been pushed into a corner of the house while the young couple had taken forcibly two-thirds of the house into their possession.Due to the incessant torture, Mr. Suraj Prakash Kawatra, had suffered a paralytic attack, the letter said.Tracing the alleged fraud of their son, the petitioners said that Mr. Naveen Arora had got a General-Power-of-Attorney (GPF) on the house from them on the pretext that he would get it rebuilt by a builder in 2000.

A few months later, however, the couple cancelled the GPF when they felt that something was amiss. However, Mr. Naveen Arora, in connivance with certain officials of the office of the Sub-Registrar concerned, got the sale deed of the property prepared in the name of his wife.

The petitioners also accused their son and daughter-in-law of stealing the original papers of the property as well as Rs. 40,000 in cash.Directing the Delhi Police to provide protection to the couple, a Division Bench, comprising Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Pradeep Nandrajog, directed Mr. Naveen Arora, his wife, and the city police to file replies to the complaint by January 20.
