dated December 31, 1953: Calcutta Test Prospects

The third unofficial Test between India and the Silver Jubilee team was due to begin on the 31st in Eden Gardens, Calcutta. The visiting team had enlisted Australian Jack Iverson for the match. A report said, "Iverson has won fame not only through his splendid bowling against England three years back, but also because of the peculiar way he grips the ball. He discovered the unorthodox grip through spinning a table-tennis ball, and earned the nickname `Finger Crip Jack'". The visitors were bound sorely to miss Frank Worrell and Sonny Ramadhin.

The absence of Worrell, a cricketing genius, left an enormous gap in batting, bowling and charisma. Ramadhin though not rising to great heights in India, but demonstrated his undoubted skills fairly effectively.
