Letters to the Editor
Sir, The withdrawal of the DMK and the MDMK from the NDA is an unfortunate development. Electoral victories in the recent State Assembly elections should not blind the BJP's central leadership to the ground realities in Tamil Nadu. It should not forget its past experience as an AIADMK ally. The DMK and the MDMK stood by it in times of crisis.
V.N. Ramachandran,
Sir, The MDMK leader, L. Ganesan, has said that his party was withdrawing from the NDA because the BJP was moving closer to the AIADMK, which has given the go-by to the principles of Annadurai and Periyar. But his own party, along with DMK, gave the go-by to the same principles when they joined hands with the BJP. Their joining the NDA was rank opportunism.
K. Malikul Azeez,
Sir, The MDMK toeing the line of the DMK indicates the polarisation of the anti-BJP forces in Tamil Nadu. But the pro-LTTE stance of the MDMK will pose a hurdle because a Congress-DMK- MDMK front will affect the image of the Congress gravely.
Quilon S. Krishnamurthy,
Sir, It is easy to fault those who do not cast their vote but such fault finders should also ponder over the dilemma the voter faces, what with the ever changing alignments and re-alignments for reasons which are not obvious. There are no principles involved, and the common comment from politicians of all hues is that "there are no permanent friends and permanent enemies in politics". At least this time round, the BJP should go it alone for the sake of principles it should not forget that the first Vajpayee Government fell by one vote.
Sridhar K.,
