The order has to be implemented in 45 days' time in accordance with the National Numbering Plan 2003 by the basic service operators and cellular mobile service providers by making Internet services accessible.Once the order is implemented, the cellular subscribers would enjoy Internet services on their personal computers and laptops just like their landline counterparts. The TRAI was provoked into issuing the directive as the issue arose following information that Internet access code 172XXX is not currently accessible from some cellular operators' networks. The directive is part of the TRAI's efforts to increase the Internet subscriber base in the country. According to S. N. Gupta, Advisor (CN), TRAI, the directive is aimed at ensuring compliance with the terms and conditions of the ISP licence and to protect the interest of the consumers. The TRAI officials said the move would enable the cell phone users with PCs or laptops to access Internet through cellular phones, but clarified that it would not enable access to Internet through mobile phones.
