Move to induct Murali into Cabinet

By Anita Joshua

NEW DELHI DEC. 30. Faced with a possible early Lok Sabha election and under pressure to put its house in order in Kerala without further ado, the Congress appears to be considering a solution that entails a Cabinet reshuffle to bring in the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, K. Muraleedharan, while retaining A.K. Antony as Chief Minister.

Though no formal `formula' has been drawn up, the Congress has asked some of its pro-Karunakaran allies in the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) to sound out the veteran Congressman to gauge whether he would be favourably inclined to accept any solution that does not involve the removal of Mr. Antony. Also, given the demand from the Antony camp for disciplinary action against Mr. Muraleedharan, feelers will have to be sent out to them before drawing up the contours of the proposal that may include giving him the Home portfolio. The Congress may be willing to put forth the proposal to Mr. Karunakaran should he send out positive signals.
