Khumukcham clinches title

KOZHIKODE DEC. 30. Khumukcham Singh of Manipur won the 17th National under-9 boys' chess championship at the Chess India Complex here on Tuesday. He beat L. Sreeharsha of Andhra in the ninth and final round and took his tally to eight points.

Samrat Ghorai of Bengal finished runner-up with 7.5 points, following his win against Sravan Kumar Dasika of Andhra.

The second place in the girls' event went to S. Gayathri of Tamil Nadu, who defeated Priyanka Kumari of Jharkand. She finished with 7.5 points, half-a-point behind her teammate J. Mohana Priya, who had won the title with a round to spare on Monday. Mohana drew her game today with Rucha Pujari of Maharashtra.
