Enhance freedom fighters' monthly pension: CPI

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry Dec. 31. The Pondicherry Communist Party of India (CPI) today urged the Administration to enhance the monthly pension of freedom fighters. A resolution to this effect was adopted at a meeting.

The resolution urged the Government to celebrate whole of next year the golden jubilee of the de facto merger of Pondicherry with the Indian Union (falling on November 1). Although every year the Administration was holding programmes to celebrate the day on August 16 (de jure merger day) it should celebrate only on November 1 as it was only on that day in 1954 did Pondicherry become part of India.

N. Kalainathan, secretary, released copies of resolutions at a press conference at which the Tamil Nadu secretary, R. Nallakannu, was also present.

The meeting expressed concern over unchecked growth in number of private educational institutions in Pondicherry and said this would only intensify commercialisation of education.

The party also urged the Government to order a CBI enquiry into grabbing of private properties.
