Special cleanliness drive in New Year

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI DEC. 30. As part of its New Year resolution, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi today announced that it would launch a special sanitation-cum-cleanliness drive in the city from January 1. Special squads have been deployed in each of the 12 Zones for the drive, which would continue till January 20, the Municipal Commissioner, Rakesh Mehta, said.

To be monitored at the highest level, Mr. Mehta said during the drive it would be ensured that proper standard of sanitation was maintained by the field agencies with proper supervision at the ground level.

Stating that the cleanliness drive cannot be successful with mere participation of safai karamcharis, Mr. Mehta said it required concerted and collected team effort by all including the civic body and citizens of the city. Efforts will also be made to ensure that the tempo of cleanliness drive is maintained in all times to come.

During the drive, he said, the commercial complexes and market places would be cleaned at night. Officers of the Conservancy and Sanitation Engineering (CSE) Department have been asked to ensure that all accumulated malba and refuge was collected from the market areas, commercial / office complexes, residential colonies, religious places and disposed of at sanitary landfill sites.

Specific directions have been issued to improve the surroundings, entry and exit points of railway stations, inter-State bus terminals, airports, markets, religious places and major road junctions.

"All public conveniences would be cleaned, washed and disinfected. Anti-fly measures would also be taken. Special cleaning measures would be made in slum clusters,'' the directive said. It also asked officials to ensure that trucks were washed daily and kept in a clean condition.
