Ramagopalan arrested

By Our Staff Reporter

NAGERCOIL DEC. 30. The police today took into custody the Hindu Munnani State organiser, R. Ramagopalan; the district vice-president, Chellasamy, and 40 others for attempting to take out a procession without police permission at Sembalanjivilai in Kanyakumari district this evening. According to sources, villagers of Sembalanjivilai planned to take out a procession to the

Thengapatnam beach in connection with the conclusion of a 10-day festival at the Navaneetha Krishna temple.

The police, however, denied a permission.

A tense situation prevailed when the villagers assembled to defy the police order. Mr. Ramagopalan rushed to Sembalanjivilai and supported the villagers.

But no sooner he began the procession than the police arrested him. Meanwhile, a group of about 300 people protested the arrests. The crowd did not disperse even after police appealed to them. Later, the police resorted to `a mild force.' None was injured. All the arrested were later released.
