Cable operator arrested

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI Dec. 30. The police on Monday arrested a cable operator for allegedly telecasting the India-Australia cricket match to his subscribers illegally.

The K.K.Nagar police arrested P. Kalai Selvan, and framed charges against him under Sections 51 and 63 of the Copyright Act for infringement. He was later remanded to judicial custody.

The police said they acted on a complaint from a representative of ESPN - STAR Sports channel. The Set-Top box, cables and other equipment were seized. By using an STB, he distributed the sports channel to subscribers. Meanwhile, a press note from ESPN-STAR said: "It is illegal and amounts to piracy if one STB is used to distribute signals to several households." Rajesh Kaul, Director, Affiliate Sales of ESPN Software India, described the police action as an "important step towards curbing piracy."
