By Our Staff Reporter
Addressing a press conference here today, the association president, K.V. Muraleedharan, and the secretary, Channankara M.P. Kunju, said 27 acres of land needed for the development of the airport remained to be acquired even eight years after the proposal was cleared. On the other hand, the 1,300 acres of land needed for the international airport at Nedumbassery had been acquired in a year, they added. The airport, which completed 13 years of international status, had facilities to cater to only three lakh passengers although a total of 12 lakh passengers were using the airport annually. The airport suffered from neglect despite the fact that nine lakh international passengers used it annually, they said. The association leaders said Air India and Indian Airlines had withdrawn flights operating from many sectors in West Asia and to Singapore. Air India had withdrawn eight flights in the recent weeks, causing inconvenience to the passengers. Air India did not have any direct flights from here to the U.S., Europe, Japan and Singapore.
