Uniform only after councillors approve: Mayor

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE Dec. 30. To ensure good quality and timely supply of uniforms to the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) school students, the Mayor, P.R. Ramesh, said on Tuesday that uniforms would be "okayed" by the area corporators.

He was replying to B.R. Nanjundappa (Janata Dal-Secular) and B.N. Mangala (Bharatiya Janata Party) at the BMP Council meeting held here.

Members alleged that the BMP officers were purchasing inferior quality uniforms from the Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation (KHDC) at high prices. "Besides, they are not supplied on time.

The uniforms for this academic year have not been given so far," Mr. Nanjundappa said. Ms. Mangala said there were other organisations, which were ready to supply good quality uniforms at lesser rates.

She said the uniforms could be supplied through the area corporator, that too only if the area corporator and the Mayor agreed to the proposal.

He directed the Commissioner, M.R. Sreenivas Murthy, to ensure that the students got uniforms within a month and initiated appropriate measures for proper supply in future.

Earlier, the Mayor asked the Commissioner to prepare a comprehensive policy for uniform recruitment of staff in BMP schools.

He was replying to the Azadnagar corporator, B.T. Sreenivas Murthy, who pointed out that many BMP schools and colleges were short staffed.

"A college in my ward does not have Commerce lecturers from the past three years. I have appointed them and am paying them from my pocket.

How long can this go on? We need enough teachers in our schools for imparting proper education," he said.

N.L. Narendra Babu, Nagpur corporator, and others supported him and demanded that the BMP immediately appoint teachers wherever required.

The Mayor said 53 retired teachers had been appointed in some schools and some more would be recruited.

He asked the Commissioner to come out with a recruitment policy.
