Site for scientific landfills ready

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE Dec. 30. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) will soon set up scientific landfills at Kannahalli and Kyalsanahalli on the city outskirts for garbage disposal complying with the Supreme Court's Solid Waste Management Committee's guidelines on the matter.

The apex court had directed all metros, including Bangalore, to have landfills ready by December 31. But, on Tuesday, amidst protests, the BMP Council resolved to permit a Hyderabad-based private firm, Ramkey Infrastructure Ltd., to go ahead with the project.

While the Opposition members wanted the subject to be approved only after a detailed discussion, the Commissioner, M.R. Sreenivas Murthy, and the Mayor, P.R. Ramesh, tried to convince them that the Supreme Court deadline had to be met.

"This will be a New Year gift from the BMP to the citizens and we will be a model to the country in disposing solid waste in a scientific manner," they said. The Commissioner said the BMP had identified over 70 acres of land in these villages.
