Leaders extend New Year greetings

CHENNAI DEC. 31. In their New Year message, the Governor, the Chief Minister and leaders of political parties have extended their greetings and good wishes to the people of Tamil Nadu.

The Governor, P.S. Ramamohan Rao, wished the people prosperity and greater happiness in an ``atmosphere of harmony and peace.''

The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, wanted the people to ``take a vow to build a strong and prosperous Tamil Nadu.''

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, expressed humanism and culture would blossom during the New Year in the hearts of the people.

The Union Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, S. Thirunavukkarasar, wanted the leadership of the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, to continue to help India attain the status of a developed nation by 2020.

The Pattali Makkal Katchi leader, S. Ramadoss, wished the people a peaceful, harmonious and prosperous life.

The State secretary of the Communist Party of India, R. Nallakannu, urged the people to strive hard to protect the secular fabric of the country. They must not allow political forces to divide the State through religion.

The State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), N. Varadarajan, hoped the New Year would witness all round happiness especially among the weaker sections and more so among the farming community. The MGR Kazhagam president, R.M. Veerappan, hoped the economically-weaker sections and farmers in particular would have a prosperous new year.
