Varaha returns to Chennai

CHENNAI DEC. 31. Coast Guard vessel, Varaha, returned today after a three-day visit to Indonesia. This was part of the `Look-East policy' of the Centre codenamed `Sahyog'.

The Chief of Staff (Operations), Eastern region, B.P. Singh, received the ship at the Chennai harbour on behalf of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (East), U.N. Chitnivas. The Chennai-based ship left here on December 16, traversed 1245 nautical miles to reach Port Belawan in Indonesia on December 20.

The ship commanded by K.P.S. Raghuvansi, was accompanied by the Fast patrol vessel, Kanaklata Barua, from Andaman and Nicobar region, to Port Belawan. It also took from Port Blair six NCC cadets for sea exposure. The Deputy Inspector-General, G.P. Raj, led the delegation of 165 Coast Guard personnel belonging to the two ships.

Briefing presspersons here, Commandant Raghuvansi said the two vessels carried out pollution response demonstrations and anti-piracy operations.

The Indonesian naval authorities evinced keen interest in the pollution response techniques and expressed desire to learn more.

Representatives from the two sides also exchanged views on anti-smuggling and search and rescue operations. The two sides also talked about the need to simplify procedures for release of fishermen who cross the maritime boundaries unknowingly.
