New DG for IMD

NEW DELHI JAN.1. The Indian Meteorological Department has got a new head. S.K. Srivastav has taken over as the new Director-General of the apex weather forecasting agency of the country in the place of R.R. Kelkar, who has retired.

Holding a doctorate in physics, Dr. Srivastav has represented India in several international organisations, including the World Meteorological Organisation.

He is now a member of the WMO's Executive Council and a permanent representative of India in the agency.

His field of expertise includes instrumentation design related to meteorological instruments, satellite payload, telecommunication network and seismological network.

One of his recent initiatives has been the establishment of a state-of-the-art earthquake risk evaluation centre in IMD. He is an alumnus of Banaras Hindu University.
