Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Special Correspondent
It is part of four rallies, launched from different places, aimed at connecting issues of globalisation and Dalit rights. The rallies would culminate at Mumbai, where the World Social Forum is beginning from January 14. By then, the four rallies would have covered 50,000 kilometres and 18 States. The former President, K. R. Narayanan, flagged off the rally from Delhi on December 5. This particular rally is accompanied by a poster exhibition, "Hidden Apartheid," on Dalit human rights also launched by Mr. Narayanan. The participants in the rally, which is coming to Hyderabad, interacted with Dalit and Adivasi agriculture labourers, employees, students and women and documented the impact of globalisation on their livelihoods, S.D.J.M. Prasad of NCDHR, said in a press release. It reached Andhra Pradesh on December 21 and organised more than 30 meetings with public, community leaders, trade union leaders and students. The rally passed through Kanchikacherla, Neerukonda, Tsunduru and Karamchedu, where it paid homage to Dalits who lost their lives resisting caste oppression. On January 3, a "Chalo Hyderabad" call has been given by various Dalit organisations to receive the rally. A public meeting will be held at Indira Park at 1 p.m. where Dalit victims will narrate their tales of suffering and humiliation. The rally leaves for Maharashtra on January 4, after passing through Warangal and Adilabad districts.
