Rajasthan Plan outlay raised

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JAN. 3. The Planning Commission today raised Rajasthan's current Annual Plan outlay by over Rs. 700 crores in order to allow it to carry out developmental work. The Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, K. C. Pant, approved the hike during a meeting here with the Chief Minister, Vansundhara Raje.

Consequently, the State's Annual Plan for 2003-04, which was fixed at Rs. 4,258 crores, is likely to go up to Rs. 5041 crores, official sources said. The hike was necessary for the State Government to go ahead with its 100-day programme for development activity in the State as promised before the recent elections.

Most of the increased amount would be raised through market borrowings for which the State Government was in talks with the Union Finance Ministry, Mr. Pant told presspersons later. "So far utilisation of Plan allocation by the State has been satisfactory. The more the developmental works in the States, the better. We have no problem in sanctioning more money for States who are utilising it properly,'' Mr. Pant said adding that the additional amount would be used for improvement of power supply, roads, drinking water and irrigation facilities.

Mr. Pant also said that the State should tap its potential in solar energy, control desert expansion through plantations and bio-engineering and proper use and extension of the Indira Gandhi Canal for rapid economic growth.
