'Padma Sadhana' conferred on Nithyasree

CHENNAI JAN. 3. Conferment of the title ``Padma Sadhana'' on Carnatic vocalist Nithyasree Mahadevan, by Justice, T.V. Masilamani of the Madras High Court, marked the inauguration of Margazhi Mahotsav music and dance festival organised by the Padma Sarangapani Cultural Academy (PSCA) held at Virugumbakkam here today.

Nithyasree Mahadevan was conferred the title in recognition of her outstanding contribution to vocal music. A ponnadai, a citation and Rs.5,000 in cash were presented to her.

Mr. Masilamani commended the efforts of the academy for encouraging latent talents of the younger generation in dance, drama and music besides honouring seasoned artistes. Ms. Nithyasree assured the academy of any assistance for preserving and promoting the rich and varied cultural heritage of the country.

Shantha Raghunathan, patron, lit a traditional lamp to mark the inauguration of the festival and the anniversary celebrations of the academy.

S. Varadan, chairman, and V. Jayakrishnan and Priya J. Krishnan, directors, and G.V. Jayalakshmi, secretary, outlined the activities of the academy, which was set up three years ago. They said the main focus of the academy was to provide residents living on the city outskirts to enjoy performances by both renowned musicians and budding artistes.
