Fabulous offerings in gold

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUMALA JAN. 3. The Hill temple of Lord Venkateswara received fabulous `donations' from devotees, who have converged atop the temple town from different parts of the country, on the occasion of `Vaikunta Ekadasi' festival today.

The president of the All-India Ambedkar S.Cs, S.T.s Welfare Association, Audi Kesavan from Chennai, made a princely offering of a golden chain (weighing more than 1 kg), with a large precious `sapphire' pendant. The offering also was studded with other precious stones like diamond, emerald, ruby and pearls. According to him, the `jewel' cost is around Rs.3 crores.

The Urban Development Minister of Karnataka, D.K. Shiv Kumar, weighed his new-born son with `gold biscuits' in `thulabharam'. According to temple sources, the gold weighed over 4 kg. However, it is learnt that the temple authorities requested him to convert it into an ornament for the presiding deity. Mohan, a native of Karnataka, donated a golden `astotharamala' to the deity apart from donating golden `Kasula-Danda' both to Sridevi and Bhudevi — the divine consorts of the Lord. The total weight of the offering is put at 2 kg.

Another devotee from Karnataka, Subbaraj Shetty, has come forward to donate a `navaratna golden harathi plate' to the temple.
