Thumping win for Panjab

KARAIKUDI JAN. 3. Defending champion Panjab University, Chandigarh, posted a 6-2 victory over Maharishi Dayanand (MD) University, Rohtak, to enter the semifinal round robin league of the all-India inter-University hockey tournament for women conducted by Alagappa University at Umayal Stadium here on Saturday.

Kanwal Deep Kaur, Sweety Bala, Jyoti Bali (2), Suman and Usha scored for Panjab while Manju Rani and Sonia scored MD.

Trailing by a goal till the last two minutes of the regulation time, last year's runner-up, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, was lucky to find the equaliser for taking the game to extra time and to tie-breaker, and eventually downed Kerala University 4-2. Akila scored for Kerala while Baljeet Kaur equalised in the dying moments of regular time for GNDU. In the tie-breaker, Sugan Deep, Meena and Mantreeth scored for GNDU and Akila only succeeded for Kerala.

Kurukshetra University made its exit from the tournament, going down to Mysore 1-2. Manavattira S. Sheelavathy, Veena scored for Mysore, while Sunitha scored for Kurukshetra.

In the last quarterfinals match, MJP Rohilkhand University, Bareilly, beat Panjabi University, Patiala, 3-0. Manjuri opened the account for MJPR in the 39th minute and Seethal and Poonamsingh scored the second and third in the 53rd and 56th minutes.
