Mary makes merry

By Our Sports Reporter

KOZHIKODE JAN. 3. Mary Ann Gomes made it five out of five when she scored an easy win over a woefully out-of-form J. Rajasurya in the sixth round of the Kajah second National sub-junior chess super league at the Chess India Complex here on Saturday. The top seed from Kolkata is sharing the lead in the girls' event with her good friend Soumya Swaminathan.

But Soumya has played an extra game, as Mary had a bye in the fourth round. M. Rajadarshini is in the sole second position with 4.5 points, half-a-point behind the leaders.

Rahul Sangma maintained his sole lead in the boys' section, despite conceding two draws on Saturday. He has five points, half-a-point ahead of the top seed S. Arun Prasad.

Rajasurya, who faced Sicilian Najdorf from Mary, resigned on the 27th move when she realised that she had blundered her way to a back rank mate. Earlier, Mary played Reti Opening against G. Pratika and won in 71 moves, on account of a centre passer in a rook-pawn ending.

Soumya beat Meenu in 42 moves of Sicilian Defence in the sixth round after defeating Kiran Monisha Monhanty in 41 moves of Pirc Defence. Rahul was held to a draw by K. Vijay Keerthi in 35 moves of French Defence Exchange variation in the morning, while in the sixth round he signed the peace treaty with Praveen Prasad after 63 moves of Sicilian Defence.
