Sanaa takes under-18 title

NEW DELHI JAN. 3. Rupesh Roy and Sanaa Bhambri walked away with the under-18 boys and girls titles respectively in the AITA junior Masters tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Saturday.

On a sunny afternoon, Rupesh was stroking smoothly and sprinting to the finish, when his opponent, Vivek Shokeen cried halt to the proceedings, unable to bear with a knee pain. Vivek had been lucky to make it to the final, as he had got a walkover from the title favourite Tushar Liberhan in the semifinals.

Tushar, getting ready for the Australian junior circuit, including the Australian Open, did not want to take a chance following a bout of fever.

Sanaa Bhambri was ruthless in smothering the hopes of stocky G.K. Shweta, much in contrast to the match in the league, when the latter had stretched her to three sets. Equally, the tournament was a good preparation for Sanaa for her Australian sojourn.

Shweta had the consolation of winning the under-14 title, as she recovered from being 1-4 down in the first set to beat Shivika Burman in straight sets.

Agnel Gladwin has been playing consistent tennis for nearly four weeks, starting with the Asian junior championship. It was no surprise that the National under-14 and under-16 champion crowned himself as the AITA Champion of the under-14 event, with an easy triumph over V. Vignesh.

The secretary general of AITA, Mr. Anil Khanna, assured all support for the junior players, while giving away the trophies.

The results: Boys: under-18 (final): Rupesh Roy bt Vivek Shokeen 6-2, 2-0 (conceded); semifinals: Rupesh Roy bt Siddharth Gulati 6-2, 7-6 (7-4); Vivek Shokeen w/o Tushar Liberhan.

Under-14 (final): Agnel Gladwin bt V. Vignesh 6-1, 6-3; semifinals: Agnel Gladwin bt Krishna Karsolia 2-6, 6-4, 6-4; V. Vignesh bt Tariq Jacob 6-2, 6-0.

Girls: under-18 (final): Sanaa Bhambri bt G.K. Shweta 6-2, 6-1; semifinals: Sanaa Bhambri bt Meghna Paritala 6-1, 6-1; G.K. Shweta bt Krushmi Chheda 6-3, 6-2.

Under-14 (final): G.K. Shweta bt Shivika Burman 6-4, 6-3; semifinals: G.K. Shweta bt Varsha Dutta 6-0, 6-0; Shivika Burman bt Niroshita Madanala 6-4, 6-4.
