Following a tip-off, a Special Cell team raided a house at Tilak Nagar in West Delhi on Friday and arrested the four accused while they were taking bets from punters. They have been identified as Manoj Jain (33), Ajay Kumar (33), Dheeraj Kochhar (29) and Rahul Vohra (30). The police said the gang used to offer bets to punters on cricket matches and were using sophisticated gadgets to carry out their operations. Apart from calculators and colour television, two laptop computers, four mobile phones and 20 landline phones with nine of them fitted with mobile phone chips were recovered from the raided premises. Interrogation of the accused revealed that the gang had got bets placed on the West Indies-South Africa and India-Australia cricket test matches which are currently underway. The gang had managed to develop a big network which helped them keep the stake value around Rs. 5 crores at any given point of time. The accused used to keep shifting their base from the Capital to Faridabad or Gurgaon. They used to get the bets from punters on the mobile phones some of which were attached to the landline. "This helped them in avoiding any controversy over the rates and the bets as the landline phone was put on the speaker mode for everybody to hear," said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), Ashok Chand. The gang was using sophisticated software which helped them keep detailed records of the betting and also retrieve them whenever there was any controversy. Manoj, the main accused, Ajay and Rahul have been arrested for organising betting rackets. The gang has been found to have links with a betting syndicate in Mumbai, which in turn is said to have international links. The four accused have been booked under the Gambling Act and further investigations in the case are on.
