Traffic diversion for procession

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JAN. 3. The route of the procession to be taken out on Sunday to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh has been changed this year on account of the ongoing Metro rail construction work.

Earlier, the procession, which began from Gurdwara Rakabganj and terminated at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, used to take Panchkuian Road to R.K. Ashram before taking a turn towards Gurdwara Bangla Sahib. This time round, the procession will again take Panchkuian Road but turn towards Bangla Sahib Road to reach Gurdwara Bangla Sahib. "We had a talk with the Prabandhak Committee and discussed the route in view of the ongoing Metro construction work following which it was decided to shorten it," said a police officer.

The new route of the procession will be: Gurdwara Rakabganj, Pandit Pant Marg, General Post Office, Ashok Road, Patel Chowk, Parliament Street, Regal Building, Connaught Circus, Madras Hotel, Panchkuian Road, Bangla Sahib Marg and Gurdwara Bangla Sahib.

The procession which begins at 10 a.m. will terminate in the evening and a large number of devotees are expected to participate in it.

Meanwhile, several traffic diversions and restrictions have been imposed. Buses going towards Central Secretariat, Connaught Place and Madras Hotel will be terminated well ahead of their destination as the entire Outer Circle of Connaught Place and some important roads in Lutyens' Delhi have been declared out of bounds for heavy vehicles. Buses approaching the heart of the Capital from Shanker Road will terminate at Mandir Marg, taking the Shanker Road-Park Street-Mandir Marg stretch. Those going to these destinations from Springdales School (Pusa Road) roundabout will terminate at Rani Jhansi Road and return via Desh Bandhu Gupta Road and Faiz Road.

On Jhandewalan roundabout, the buses will take Rani Jhansi Road before terminating at Arambagh Lane. They will return via Desh Bandhu Gupta Road. Buses going towards East and North Delhi and New Delhi railway station through the Jhandewalan roundabout will take Desh Bandhu Gupta Road-Pul Paharganj route and proceed further.

No buses would be allowed to enter the Connaught Place-Chelmsford Circus stretch leading to New Delhi railway station.

Buses coming from Kamla Market roundabout and going towards Connaught Place will terminate at Shivaji statue after taking Jawaharlal Nehru Marg-Thompson Road route. They will return via Minto Road. Those coming to the heart of the Capital from Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg-Press Road would terminate at Press Road and also return on the same route.

No buses or goods vehicle would be allowed to take the Ranjit Singh flyover for going towards Barakhamba Road. Buses coming from the Mandi House side would terminate there itself and return via Tilak Marg. No buses would be allowed on Kasturba Gandhi Marg-Ferozeshah Road towards Connaught Place. Similarly, no buses would be allowed on Ashok Road till the "C"-hexagon.

Buses taking Akbar Road to reach Connaught Place, Madras Hotel and Central Secretariat will be taking Maulana Azad Road and terminate at Janpath. They will return via Motilal Nehru Marg-Akbar Road.

Rajpath and Rafi Marg would be kept out of bounds for all buses and goods vehicles.

Other terminal points would be Sunehri Bagh Road and Dalhousie Road.

Buses coming from Thyagaraja Marg-Rajaji Marg roundabout, Gyarah Murti and Gole Methi roundabout will not be allowed to reach Connaught Place or Central Secretariat.
