Former minister dead

TUMKUR JAN. 3. Y.K. Ramaiah (64), MLA of Huliyurudurga in Tumkur district, former Minister, and Congress leader, died of cardiac arrest at his house in Kunigal on Saturday. He was laid to rest with State honours in his garden in the evening.

The Home Minister, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, and other political leaders were present at the funeral. The body was taken in a procession on the main streets of the town. Over 25,000 people gathered for the funeral.

Mr. Ramaiah is survived by his wife, Anasuya, daughter of the writer, Besagarahalli Ramanna of Maddur, three sons, a daughter, and two grandchildren. The former Prime Minister, Chandra Shekhar, and the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, were among a large number of leaders who gathered here on August 3, 2002 for the Y.K. Ramaiah-60 festival. Five volumes on his life were brought out on the occasion.

Mr. Ramaiah fought for the implementation of the Hemavathy Tumkur Canal Project and was sent to jail when he led an agitation in this regard. His mission was fulfilled when water flowed into Kunigal Doddakere last year.
