Tax relief for Govt. staff demanded

NEW DELHI JAN. 3. The BJP leader, V.K. Malhotra, today demanded a special relief package for government employees, pensioners and senior citizens in the next budget. Prof. Malhotra met the Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, this afternoon and requested him to raise the tax exemption under 20 per cent slab up to Rs. 3,00,000.

In a statement, Prof. Malhotra said he requested the Finance Minister to merge Dearness Allowance in pay as recommended by the Fifth Pay Commission. He said the commission had recommended that D.A. of government servants should be merged with the pay when it reached 50 per cent of the pay.

Prof. Malhotra also referred to the Government's scheme for pensioners and senior citizens enabling them to invest Rs. 2 lakhs at 9 per cent interest to get a monthly income of Rs. 2,000.
