Mulayam files nomination for Gunnaur by-election

Badaun Jan 5. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, filed his nomination papers for the Gunnaur by-election here this afternoon.

Mr Yadav was accompanied by Samajwadi Party national general secretary, Amar Singh, and party MP, Akhilesh Singh. Mr Yadav filed three sets of nomination papers.

The Gunnaur seat was vacated by the present state minister, Ajit Kumar Raju, for Mr Yadav, following which the by-election is slated to be held.

After filing nominations, Mr Yadav directed the District Magistrate and the SSP to provide full security to the candidates of opposing parties. He said both the officials would be solely responsible for the security of other contestants.

Mulayam Singh said Lok Sabha elections were likely to be held in the last week of April and asked party workers to get ready to defeat ``fascist forces''. He added that the Samajwadi Party would try to win 60 seats to strengthen his hold at the Centre. ``It is ironical that whenever I become Chief Minister, the saffron parties start harping on Ayodhya and Ram Mandir issue,'' he said.

Yadav alleged that the NDA government at the Centre had failed on all fronts.

He said his government was committed to development. ``A few steps have been taken in this regard. The onus is now on the workers to popularise the good work done by my government among the masses,'' the Chief Minister said.

The CM said he would work for the development of Badaun district along with Gunnaur and soon make the admission procedure in schools and colleges here easier.

On the Atal-Musharraf meet, he said though the leaders had shook hands, their hearts were not one, therefore the talks would not yield any result.

He added he was in favour of good relations with the neighbouring nations and said that the foreign policy of the Central government had failed in this regard because when the US attacked Iraq, then India did not criticise it. On terrorism, Mr Yadav said the present government at the Centre had received support from all corners, still terrorism was rising. - PTI & UNI
