Social deficit

Sir, — I refer to the editorial "Overcoming social deficits" (Jan. 5). India's economic progress in recent times has been commendable. However, our lukewarm attention to issues such as basic education and women's empowerment will come in the way of India joining the list of developed nations.

Sir, — Land reforms that will boost the agricultural economy should be implemented immediately. Even the Mandal Commission has pointed out that reservation will not give social justice without the implementation of land reforms.
