Indian sentenced in Singapore

By P.S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE Jan. 6. An Indian national, Vidya Shankar Aiyar, was today sentenced by a Singapore subordinate court to a prison term of 16 months on two counts of sexual offence against a woman, whose name and identity cannot be disclosed under court rules. Mr. Aiyar, well known here as a former television presenter, was also awarded an additional punishment of four strokes of caning.

The District Judge, Victor Yeo Khee Eng, granted Mr. Aiyar bail pending appeal against today's verdict. Having pronounced the accused guilty in a finding delivered here on December 30, the judge passed the sentence today after rejecting the defence counsel's "mitigation plea.''

A four-month imprisonment was imposed in respect of one of the two counts, both relating to the charges of outraging the modesty of the woman, with a 12-month jail term as regards the second offence. These two sentences would run consecutively and not concurrently, Judge Victor Yeo said.
