Speed up implementation of schemes: CM

Pondicherry Jan. 6. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, who is also in charge of the Finance portfolio, today called upon officials to ensure that the schemes evolved under the Annual Plan implemented expeditiously.

Chairing a meeting organised by the Planning and Research department of the Pondicherry Administration to review the expenditure incurred under the current annual plan (2003-2004) here, Mr. Rangasamy said the benefits of all schemes should reach the targeted groups on time. He asked the officials to review periodically the progress of implementation of the schemes.

Schemes announced in the last budget session and assurances given on the floor of the Assembly were also discussed. Most of the assurances were fulfilled, it was stated.

The Welfare Minister, M. Chandirakasu, the Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, the Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, the Local Administration Minister, A. Elumalai, the Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam, the Chief Secretary, R. Padmanabhan, the Education Secretary, M. Sathiavathi and the Labour Secretary, C.S. Khairwal, the Development Commissioner, B. Vijayan, and the Inspector-General of Police, U.K. Katna, took part in the meeting.

`62 per cent funds spent'

Meanwhile, a communication from the Director of Planning and Research department, M. Sreedharan, released after the meeting, pointed out that the Chief Minister was informed that of the Rs. 452.77 crores earmarked for the current financial year, as much as Rs. 280.39 crores was spent till the end of December 2003.This constituted 62 per cent of the total allocation. This was four per cent more than the expenditure incurred during the corresponding period the previous year.

However, Mr. Rangasamy pointed out that the target fixed at the last review meeting (85 per cent expenditure) had not been achieved.

He was informed that works were progressing fast and the entire allocation would be spent by the middle of March.

He was told that expenditure sanction had been obtained from the Government for the implementation of schemes relating to Health, Electricity, Industries, Adi Dravidar Welfare, Social Welfare and Women and Child Development departments.

The entire allocation for these departments would be spent before the end of February.
