Over 75 killed in encounters in 2003

Raipur Jan 6. There was a spurt in Naxalite activities in Chhattisgarh in the past year with a total of 78 people, including 31 police personnel, being killed in 103 encounters in the state. ``A total of 103 encounters took place between Naxalites and police in the year 2003, in which 31 securitymen, three government employees and 35 civilians were killed,'' police sources said here today.

The People's War Group and the Maoist Communist Centre were active in 96 police stations areas of the state spread over about seven districts, and there was an increase in Naxalite activities last year in the state compared to the previous year.

Besides burning the vehicles of the Border Road Organisation and creating obstacle to road construction work in the Bastar region, the Naxalites also attempted to disrupt mining activities in Sarguja area, close to Jharkhand border, looted foodgrains meant for Food For Work programme, set ablaze godowns of the government and disrupted drought relief work, sources said.

The Naxalites also forced several elected panchayat representatives of Dantewada district of Bastar region to resign to prove their strength. -- PTI
