Pregnant prisoner's case given to CBI

Patna Jan 6. The Bihar government has recommended a CBI probe into the case of undertrial Najma Khatun, who became pregnant in judicial custody last year, official sources said today.

The government decided to hand over the matter to the premier investigating agency on the recommendation of police headquarters, Director Jails, B.J.P. Singh told PTI.

On the recommendation of Sasaram jail authorities, where Khatun was put up, a case in this connection was lodged with Sasaram's mufassil police station in May last year.

A committee of legislative council was also constituted to look into the matter after the issue was raised in the House.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and National Women Commission (NWC) had also expressed serious views on the matter.

Initial probe into the matter had revealed that Khatun became pregnant during her stay in Sadar hospital in Sasaram during her judicial custody last year. Her husband, also in the same jail but in separate male ward, had refused to accept the newborn baby boy.

A Sasaram court had in December last year ordered DNA test of 12 persons including six policemen.

Khatun was still in Sasaram jail with her child.

Singh said seeing the sensitivity of the matter and a recommendation from the police headquarters, the state government has handed over the case to CBI for a quick and thorough probe. -- PTI
