Sonia foreign origin no issue, says CPI(M)

ELURU JAN. 3. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) politburo member, Koratala Satyanarayana, has said the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin cannot be a hindrance for her to become Prime Minister in the light of a Supreme Court ruling.

Citing the observation by the apex court that anybody upon becoming the Indian citizen could occupy the highest Constitutional office, irrespective of his or her origin, the CPI(M) leader at a press conference here on Tuesday ridiculed the attempts of National Democratic Alliance partners to bring to the fore the foreign origin issue as a plank in the coming elections.

However, he chose to play it safe while fielding a question on whether his party favoured Ms. Sonia's candidature for the post of Prime Minister. "It's a question to be addressed by political parties," Mr. Satyanarayana said.
