Govt. urged not to exclude migrants
Hyderabad
Jan. 6.
The Telangana Regional Congress Committee (TRCC) has asked the Government not to exclude migrant population from the voter list in the name of verification.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the convenor of the TRCC, G. Chinna Reddy, said a large number of people had migrated to distant places in search of livelihood last year from several districts. A big chunk of them constituted agricultural labour.
Adverse seasonal conditions and apathy of the Government had forced them to shift to Mumbai and Bangalore. Thousands of them had come to Hyderabad, too, in search of employment, he said. Referring to the reported remark of the Chief Electoral Officer, M. Narayana Rao, that the names of those not residing at the addresses shown in the lists for the last three months would be deleted, Dr. Chinna Reddy said most of the migrant labour would return soon.
The phenomenon was not confined to Telangana districts alone, but to the entire State. Hence, such names should not be deleted unless the voters had permanently moved out by selling away their property, he surmised.
He said TRCC members would span out into districts soon to launch an intensive campaign on the Congress's commitment to the Telangana cause. He said the issue of separate statehood for Telangana was raised by Congress MLAs in 2000 and the TRS began its campaign much later. He urged voters of the Telangana region to realise that separate statehood was possible only if the Congress was voted to power at the Centre and the State and not otherwise.
Though the Bharatiya Janata Party was in favour of smaller States, it would never do justice to Telangana because of its dependence on the Telugu Desam Party, he said asking the electorate to reject the TDP-BJP combine in the elections.
