Vizag fishermen detained in Orissa

VISAKHAPATNAM JAN. 6. Seventy-seven crew members of 11 mechainsed fishing boats from Visakhapatnam are being detained in Orissa for allegedly violating the fishing zone limits off the State's coast. The 11 boats were intercepted by a Coast Guard ship on the morning of January 1 off Astrang, near Puri.

The AP Mechanised Fishing Boat Operators Welfare Association president, P.C. Appa Rao, along with some office-bearers and boat owners, has been camping in Orissa for the last three days, negotiating with the officials there.

According to information received by the association general secretary, M. Polisetti, on Tuesday evening, the Orissa Commissioner of Fisheries had agreed to release the fishermen after collecting some penalty. The fishermen are expected to return here in a couple of days.

"There is a ban on fishing by mechanised boats within 5 km off the Orissa coast and this limit has been extended up to 20 km between November and February as a step to conserve turtles. However, the boat crew from Visakhapatnam were not aware of this and were detained by the Coast Guard,'' Mr. Polisetti told The Hindu.

Mr. Polisetti said that following the 20 km rule was difficult, and even some boat owners from Orissa had moved the court against this rule, since it was also depriving them of their earnings.
