Medicos stir: Opposition stages rally

Cuddapah Jan. 6. The functionaries of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Congress, the Janata Dal (S) and other organisations took out a protest rally from the old bus stand to the Collectorate on Tuesday evening in support of the striking junior doctors.

The CPI(M) district secretary, B. Narayana, the Congress' Cuddapah constituency convenor, B. Hanmanthu, the Janata Dal (S) leader, Y.M. Prathap Reddy, the CPI leader, S.A. Sattar, the CITU district president, A. Raghunatha Reddy, Awaaz district convenor, S. Magbul Basha and the Rayalaseema Karmika Karshaka Samithi president, Ch. Chandrasekhar Reddy, called on the Collector and demanded that the Government redress the junior doctors' grievances.

They opposed G.O. No. 90 and alleged that the Government proposed handing over of maintenance of Government hospitals and medical colleges to societies and private individuals and levy of user charges. The Government was withdrawing budgetary support and it would lead to collection of hefty user charges to mop up resources needed to run Government hospitals and medical colleges, they alleged.

The Government decision would lead to exorbitant rise in charges and fees in medicare and education and endanger the interests of the poor and rural people and students, they alleged. They demanded scrapping of G.O. No. 90 and also G.O. No. 487, which facilitated open auctioning of three per cent of medical seats and 25 per cent of post-graduate seats in Government colleges.

Demanding steps to resolve the 24-day strike by junior doctors, they charged the Government with trying to suppress the stir. Terming the junior doctors' demands as justified, they warned that an all-party agitation would be launched if the Government did not concede the demands.

The Kulavivaksha Vyatireka Porata Samithi district secretary, C. Babu, the Student Federation of India (SFI) secretary, T. Sunil, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) secretary, D.C. Venkataiah and the Andhra Pradesh Youth Congress secretary, Arifullah Khan, also took part.
