Software to check bogus voters

ANANTAPUR JAN. 6. A substantial number of bogus voters will be deleted from electoral rolls in the district in the coming days with the introduction of a software provided by the Election Commission of India to detect duplication of names with same photo identity card numbers.

The software named "ROLL'' was introduced in the district yesterday and the exercise of checking duplication commenced with the detection of 163 names in Gorantla Assembly segment.

The District Revenue Officer, V. Mohan Rao, told today that the software would verify and validate the data for locating repetitions of names. He stated that the software was already being used successfully to prevent enrolment of bogus voters in Tamil Nadu and a few other States.

The software would verify the data with categories like name, sex, age and photo identity card number. Citing an example, the DRO stated that the software had identified 125 cases of duplication with Telugu alphabet "a'' in the Gorantla segment. Mandal officials would verify such names with the photo identity card numbers and delete them if the card numbers were found to be the same for more than one such names.

As part of the summary revision of electoral rolls, names of 2,93,831 voters had been deleted after serving notices to 8,12,113 voters who were not having the photo identity cards in the district. Deleted voters included those who had left the place permanently, migrated, left the place for employment or those not in contact with the native place for long time.

Such deletions were high in Anantapur where 60 per cent of 1,13,981 voters, who were served notices, were deleted, Kadiri (52.9 pc), Madakasira (49.3), Dharmavaram (42.9) and Nallamada (41.8). Besides, names of 27,069 voters who had died, had also been deleted.

Regarding claims for inclusion in rolls, the DRO stated that against 2,05,221 applications received, 1,18,000 were admitted till January 5 and except 9,002 applications pending enquiry in Tadipatri segment, the remaining were rejected.
