TNAU focus on post-harvest technology
COIMBATORE
Jan. 6.
The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) is working on a holistic approach to integrate farm business, right from production to post-harvest procedures. The move is based on the need to sensitise farmers on post-harvest practices such as cleaning, grading and packaging, in order to access semi-urban, urban and overseas markets, the Vice-Chancellor of the TNAU, C. Ramasamy, has said.
He pointed out that during a meet on contract farming in cotton sometime ago here, buyers from Korea had checked the quality of the produce in the farm.
"This reveals the need to maintain high quality standards by farmers to have export potential," he said after inaugurating a training programme on post-harvest technology and food processing recently. He expressed concern over poor quality of the thrashing floors in the villages and said this led to contamination of the farm produce.
Stating that the establishment of 30 food parks in Virudhunagar district was a significant step towards boosting exports, he said the varsity had a crucial role to play in these parks with its food processing expertise. "With the food habits of the rural and urban population changing, transfer of post-harvest technology to cater to the changing tastes assumes greater significance now." He said the TNAU had even tied up with the Food Corporation of India to train its officers on the post-harvest technology and its transfer to the beneficiaries.
The Dean of the Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute at the TNAU, R. Manian, and Professor, McGill University (Canada), G.S.V. Raghavanalso spoke.
