Gujarati couple with `forged' passports detained at airport
CHENNAI
JAN. 6.
The Chennai airport immigration authorities are facing a piquant situation, with the detention of a Gujarati couple at the Anna International Terminal (AIT) here on charges of possessing "forged passports" soon after they landed from Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
According to airport sources, the couple was actually intercepted by immigration authorities at Taipei airport when they were travelling by a Malaysian Airlines flight to Los Angeles after having travelled from Chennai to Singapore by an Indian Airlines service and from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur by a Malaysian Airlines flight.
The Taipei authorities immediately deported them back to Kuala Lumpur. The aged couple landed here on Monday morning. On arrival at the AIT, the husband suffered a major cardiac problem. After medical assistance rendered by the airport doctor, he was admitted to a private nursing home at Guindy.
While the Malaysian Airlines authorities are waiting for him to recover, the companion is now at the "passenger refusal room" at the airport as she cannot be deported alone to Kuala Lumpur.
Preliminary investigations revealed that they spoke Hindi fluently and the couple claimed that they are Gujaratis from Hyderabad. As the immigration authorities are yet to establish the nationality of the couple, they will be sent back to Kuala Lumpur.
The detention comes close on the heels of a racket providing "fast track clearances" without any travel documents at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
