Woman kills daughter, self

BANGALORE JAN. 6. A 30-year-old woman, who was allegedly being harassed for dowry by her husband and in-laws, committed suicide after reportedly killing her daughter at their house in Seshadripuram Police Station limits on Tuesday afternoon.

The dead have been identified as Bhagyalakshmi and her daughter, Dhanushree (4). According to the police, Bhagyalakshmi had married Muralidhara, a private company employee, five years ago.

The couple had rented a house at 2nd Cross, R.V. Shetty Layout, Seshadripuram. Police said Muralidhara and his parents used to harass Bhagyalakshmi to bring dowry.

The couple, who had a strained relationship, had quarrelled on Tuesday morning, they said. Police said that around 2.30 p.m. when Muralidhara had gone to work and her in-laws were asleep, Bhagyalakshmi reportedly took her daughter to the bathroom and bolted the door from inside. She reportedly doused Dhanushree and herself in kerosene and set her daughter on fire before setting herself ablaze. Both were killed on the spot, police said. Seshadripuram Police have registered a case.
