Two convicted on charge of rape
BANGALORE
JAN. 6.
The Second Additional District and Sessions Court (Bangalore Rural) has convicted two tractor drivers, Muthuraya (26) and Devaraj (27) of Nallahalli village of Kanakapura taluk, on the charge of sexually assaulting a 13-year old schoolgirl.
It is alleged that the two waylaid the girl while she was going to school and took her to an isolated place, where they allegedly raped her. The incident occurred in November 2001.
Since the victim was a Dalit, there were several protests by Dalit organisations, following which the case was referred to the Corps of Detectives. While the two men pleaded that they were falsely implicated, the Public Prosecutor, Mohammad Sadat Ali, presented forensic evidence which showed that they were guilty, according to reports. The Judge, C. Sudhir Kumar, sentenced Muthuraya to seven years imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 10,000 while Devaraj was sentenced to a four- year prison term with a fine of Rs. 5.000.
Convicted
The 10th Additional Sessions Judge has sentenced Nandeesh, a resident of Hosaguddadahalli, to seven years rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs. 15,000 on the charge of driving his wife to suicide.
It is said that Nandeesh who married Chandrakala, a resident of Kasturbanagar in September 2000, was harassing her.
Unable to bear the harassment, Chandrakala allegedly ended her life by setting herself ablaze in August 2001.
The Judge ordered that the fine collected be paid to Bhagyamma, mother of Chandrakala.
