Wishful thinking

Sir, — "Opposition can still do it" (Jan. 7) is wishful thinking. The fundamental problem with the Opposition is leadership. The BJP has progressed over time mainly due to the development of second line leaders.

The smaller parties do not have an identical strategy to fight the BJP on an all-India basis and many prefer to be with the NDA, since it is a better bet.

The Congress should contemplate putting its house in order to displace the NDA in the 2009 election.

Sir, — The BJP-led NDA has been able to provide a stable government for a full term, though differences have surfaced among the alliance partners.

The grand alliance the Congress intends to form against the BJP cannot work. The Congress itself is a divided house.

Sir, — There is no denying that the speculators in the stock markets, the businessmen who protect or improve their profits because of low interest rates and their new-found freedom to get rid of employees, and a small section of the middle class who made it good in the liberalised economy are having a good time. But the same is not the case with the villagers who are dependent on agriculture for a living, the industrial workers who are not certain whether they will get their next pay packets, the millions of urban unemployed, the sick who do not get medical attention at affordable cost, and the poor in general.

K. Vijayakumar,

Sir, — True, India has achieved a commendable growth of 8.4 per cent in the second quarter of 2003. But at what cost? Today both the Government and the private sector are employing less people. Unemployment has risen to unprecedented levels. In the last decade disparity has also increased.

Dipak Kumar,

New Delhi
