WMC global conference in August

DUBAI JAN. 7. The World Malayalee Council (WMC) has chosen Bahrain's capital Manama for its next global conference scheduled from August 18 to 20 this year.

The biennial event — the previous one was held in the German city of Dingden in August 2002 — is expected to bring together 1,000 Keralites living in different parts of the world. An organising committee with Francis Joseph as general convener has been elected to make preparations for the conference that would be hosted by the Bahrain chapter of the WMC, Gulf Daily News said today.

Gopala Pillai, the WMC's United States-based global general secretary and M.C. Sebastian, the Saudi-based Middle East Region chairman attended the preparatory meeting of the organising committee where Joseph said Bahraini government officials have welcomed the meet.

The WMC, which is divided into six regional councils covering North America, Middle East, Africa, Far East and Australia, Europe and India, has several welfare projects in Kerala. The most important of them is the Nava Kerala Project, under which a number of villages are being adopted and developed into model villages. UNI
