MADIKERI JAN. 7. The Deputy Commissioner, Srikant Valagad, on Wednesday said Rs. 119.14 lakh had been collected from 648 self-help groups, including 340 groups comprising members from the below the poverty line (BPL) category.

He was presiding over a meeting of the Stree Shakti Programme Coordination Committee at the Old Assembly Hall here, according to a press release issued here.

Calling upon officials to ensure the success of the Stree Shakti scheme in the district, Mr. Valagad said the scheme had infused a new lease of life in women by empowering them economically.

Funds had been provided to 591 SHGs, Mr. Valagad said and added that the members of 31 SHGs had been trained in anthurium cultivation.

There were 190 SHGs in Madikeri, 233 in Somwarpet, and 225 in Virajpet taluks.

Though it was intended to set up 600 SHGs in Kodagu district, 648 groups had been set up, he said.

Mr. Valagad instructed the hobli-level nodal officers to visit the SHGs regularly and submit a report on their working.

The bank officials should also help in implementing the programme, Mr. Valagad said.
