Belgaum
End disconnection drive, farmers urge KPTCL
BELGAUM
JAN. 7.
The Shetkari Sabha has urged the Government to direct Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (KPTCL) against disconnecting power to irrigation pumpsets for delayed payment of electricity bills.
Farmers from different parts of the district staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Wednesday opposing what they termed KPTCL's anti-farmer policies. In a memorandum submitted to the Government, the farmers said KPTCL had issued notices stating that power supply to irrigation pumpsets would be stopped if farmers failed to pay the electricity bill within 15 days.
The farmers said it was common knowledge that the entire State, especially districts in north Karnataka, was reeling under a severe drought. Belgaum district had been declared drought-hit by the Government, they said and added that three years of drought had played havoc with the lives of farmers.
At such a juncture, KPTCL had resorted to such stringent moves, which, they said, was condemnable.
Instead of bringing down transmission and distribution losses and taking action to prevent power thefts, KPTCL was passing on the burden to farmers, they said.
The farmers threatened to launch a dharna if KPTCL disconnected power supply to irrigation pumpsets.
