Court admits Sharma's petition
By Our Special Correspondent
MUMBAI
Jan. 7.
The Mumbai High Court today admitted a petition by the former Police Commissioner of Mumbai, R.S. Sharma, challenging his arrest under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act in the multi-crore stamp paper scam.
A Bench, comprising Justice V.G. Palshikar and P.V. Kakade, asked the Maharashtra Government to respond to the petition by filing an affidavit. Mr. Sharma was arrested by the Special Investigation Team last November soon after he retired.
Mr. Sharma also urged the court to restrain the SIT from seeking his custody. The judges would consider his plea on January 15 next. Mr. Sharma also challenged the appointment of the retired police officer, S.S. Puri, as the head of the SIT.
