Post-Godhra riots: CBI files first case

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JAN. 7. Registering the first case pertaining to the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat following a Supreme Court directive, the Central Bureau of Investigation has booked three persons for allegedly gangraping the sisters of a pregnant woman and murdering her relatives.

The case was registered against Jaswant Nai, Govind Nai and Naresh Moriya under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rape and murder, according to CBI spokesman here today.

A bench of the apex court comprising Justice S. Rajendra Babu, Justice A.R. Lakshmanan and Justice G.P. Mathur had directed the CBI on December 16 to file a status report of its probe within eight weeks. According to the FIR, Bilkis Yakub alleged that after the train burning incident, she and her relatives, were chased by a mob in Panivela village and beaten up. She alleged that the mob raped her sisters and murdered some of her relatives. Counsel for the victim, Harish Salve, had informed the court that the Gujarat police had filed a closure report in the case on technical grounds despite clear information about the accused given in the FIR by the victim.
