Scheme to promote diversification of jute products proposed

Pondicherry Jan 7. T. Nandakumar, Secretary General of International Jute Study Group Dhaka (Bangladesh) said today that a $ 2-million programme to promote diversification of jute products in small scale sector had been evolved and it might go on stream at the earliest to benefit the jute products manufacturers in the two countries.

While $ 1million of the proposed project was accounted for by the grants the remaining amount would be in the form of soft loans. A simple formality was to be finalised and once this was done the project would be implemented, he told presspersons here.

He was here to participate in the inauguration of the six-day long Jute Fair organised by Jute Manufactures Development Council attached to the Union Textiles Ministry.

The Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, inaugurated the fair where stalls showcasing the jute products produced by various units in different parts of the country.

Arun Bal, Secretary of the Jute Manufactures Development Council, who was also present said that Rs. 916 crores worth of jute products had been exported from the country during last year (2002-2003) which was Rs. 300 crores more than the exports done in the preceding year.

It was estimated that the export would touch Rs. 1100 crores this year.
