Mumbai DCP arrested

MUMBAI JAN. 7. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) tonight arrested Mumbai's Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Pradeep Sawant, for allegedly going soft on junior officers who had been found to be hand in glove with the principal accused in the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam, Abdul Telgi. With his arrest, almost the entire Crime Branch is now behind the bars.

Mr. Sawant was arrested at the end of sustained questioning by the sleuths of the SIT. He was taken to Pune where he was produced before a court for getting the police remand. This was the fifth time he was called for questioning.

Earlier, the SIT arrested Additional Commissioner (Crime), Shridhar Vagal, and the former Police Commissioner of Mumbai, R.S. Sharma, and about a dozen police officers.
